2 Series

BMW promises us the 2022 2 Series is the next generation of rear-wheel drive sports coupes and convertibles. (Remember, the coupe and convertible are NOT related to the Gran Coupe, which rides a MINI-shared FWD architecture.) With a two-inch longer wheelbase, over four inches more length over two-and-a-half inches more width, the 2 Series is new and should offer a more comfortable interior. It awaits us if the driving dynamics are adversely affected by this extra real estate, though a reduction in height of an inch should help. Front and rear tracks are well over two inches wider, another statistic that should improve handling.

#SavetheManuals lowers its flag to half mast: the 230i and M240i don't offer a third pedal. Maybe the M2...

At introduction, 230i models will all be rear-wheel drive and M240i models will all feature standard xDrive all-wheel drive. A limited-slip rear differential is standard on M240i; when not required, the transfer case will open, sending all power to the rear wheels.

The optional Parking Assistant now also brakes, accelerates, and changes gears, as well as steers during parallel or perpendicular automated parking.

Automatic dimming interior and side mirrors are now standard.

2 Series Gran Coupe

There is a $2000 price decrease on 228i models for 2022, as all-wheel drive moves to the options list, with a new standard front-wheel drive model added to the roster. M235i's price and standard xDrive all-wheel drive are both the same.

One-touch window function has been added to the rear windows.

Adaptive suspension is no longer offered.

Wireless charging and automated parking are, at least temporarily, not available.

3 Series

Live Cockpit Pro with Navigation Professional is a mandatory $600 option.

The Parking Assistance Package with its Surround Vision 360-degree camera view and automated parking system is discontinued, a victim of the computer chip shortage. Wireless charging is also not available for 2022.

4 Series

The Gran Coupe (4-door hatchback) joins the Coupe (actual 2-door) and Convertible. The new Gran Coupe initially will only offer rear-wheel drive 430i 4-cylinder turbo, and all-wheel drive M440i 6-cylinder  turbo xDrive versions; all with an 8-speed automatic, no stick.

Coupes and convertibles see a $200 increase. Wireless charging and automated parking are, at least temporarily, not available.

The M440i is now available with rear-wheel drive, $2000 less than the xDrive version, in all models.

Prices are down $3000 to $12,000 on coupe models. Nineteen-inch wheels are now standard, replacing eighteens.  Wireless charging and automated parking are, at least temporarily, not available.

The 8 Series Gran Coupe now boasts an Alpina B8 model, with larger rear tires (285) on 21" wheels and almost 100 horsepower more than the M850i, the 612-horsepower 4.4 turbo V8 is strictly an all-wheel drive (xDrive) proposition and uses the 8-speed automatic found on the M8.

i4

After a long wait, BMW's battery-powered i-series has new members: the iX sport utility and the i4 sedan. The i4, as its name implies, is an electrified 4 Series Gran Coupe. It loses two cubic feet of trunk volume and one cubic foot of passenger volume, but its wheelbase, overall length, and body width are identical. The i4 is marginally (0.2 inches) taller than the 4 Series Gran Coupe, and its track widths are somewhat different due to its electric motors. Inexplicably, its turning diameter is over half a foot larger: 40 feet, compared to the 4 GT's 39.4.

Power is generated by one motor on the rear axle producing 335 horsepower (eDrive40) or by two motors, front and rear, producing a total of 536 horsepower and 586 pound-feet (M50). Range varies from 227 to 301 miles.

iX

Unlike the i4, the iX is not built on an established gasoline platform, but a new, scalable architecture on which future BMWs will be based. With a 118.1-inch wheelbase and overall length of 195 inches, it has a longer footprint than all but the X7. On the inside, the iX has more cargo space than the X5, and it only offers two seating rows.

All iX models have standard all-wheel-drive, powered by two motors totaling 516 horsepower for xDrive50 models and 610 for M60 models. Range maxes out at 324 for the xDrive50 model with 20-inch wheels. M60 models are not yet rated.

M3

xDrive all-wheel drive will now be an option on the 8-speed automatic M3 Competition.

Remote start is now available with automatic transmission, i.e. Competition models.

M5

A new variant, the M5 CS, adds 10 more horsepower over the M5 Competition, for a total of 627 @ 6000 RPM.

Wireless charging is pulled.

M8

Only the Competition is available for 2022, making 617 horsepower, standard. The prices are the same as last year's standard model.

Wireless phone charging has been discontinued.

A refresh changes the grille, bumpers, headlights, taillights, and exhaust tips. The drag coefficient is worse: .32 - .35, up from .29 - .32. Nineteen-inch wheels with 245/50R19 tires replace eighteens. All-season run-flats are still standard.

The fully digital instrument cluster, called Live Cockpit Plus, is now standard on the X3. It is a 10.25-inch virtual gauge cluster that can take on different configurations and designs depending upon the driving mode and driver preference. Sadly, you cannot configure it with a full-time complete complement of gauges: oil pressure, battery voltage, oil temperature, turbo boost, etc. Live Cockpit Plus, with a 12.3-inch display, is optional.

Remote engine start is now optional.

Voice control is now standard, utilizes natural language abilities, can be activated without a button by saying "Hey BMW!" and can control climate control and even windows.

Automatic high beams and adaptive (LED) headlights that move dependent on speed and steering are now standard.

The X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid is discontinued.

In addition to these changes, X3 M models receive a bump in torque from 442 to 457 and from 469 to 479 pound-feet for regular and Competition models, respectively. Fuel mileage still improves by 1 MPG across the board: 15 city/20 highway and 17 combined MPG. Standard tire size goes up by 10 millimeters in front: 255.
